The family Psittacidae or New World parrots is one of three families of true parrots. The New World parrots are most often green, and range in size from the hefty Ara macaws to the diminutive Forpus parrotlets. Their signature characteristic is a stout, deep-based, hooked bill that is roughly semi-circular when closed and more versatile than a Swiss Army knife—as a nutcracker, climbing appendage, loudspeaker, can-opener, leather punch, etc.
